RC glider and sailplane

Hello everyone, I'm the new kid on the block.  Thank you for accepting my membership...I look forward to reading a lot here.  Since I have been out of RC for a while, I guess I could start my residency by asking you all a subject that I know could be heated.

Just before Christmas 2011, I purchased a Spektrum DX6i and a Parkzone Radian.  I went to the field and flew the Radian for about 5 minutes (it was nice and docile) when all of a sudden, I lost total control of the airplane.  Now, I know I have been out of this hobby for a while, but getting behind a 3 channel sailplane with the flight characteristics of a baloon thermaller, I should have been able to recover immedidately.  However, the plane did some crazy things, spiralled and crashed...pretty bad.  When I checked the receiver, it still had it's light on and the servos seem to all be working fine.

Those that were in the park said that the glider was flying perfectly and could not understand what happened.  Then someone said that another flyer lost an airplane (foamie as well) the weekend before and they too were using a Spektrum radio.

Ok, so now I'm a bit afraid of the Spektrum DX6i and I have ordered the Hitec Aurora 9 radio system.  I used to fly with a Hitec Eclipse 7 in 72mhz flavor and NEVER had any issues with that system. I'm thinking of sending the Spektrum radio back to Spektrum so they can check it out and ONLY fly smaller inexpensivie Bind-and-Fly planes.  However, I'm even deterred from doing that because there is the safety of others that are at hand when someone loses their airplane's control.

Has anyone had or heard of any problems with the Spektrum radios/gear?

I apologize for the long-winded write-up...

Regards to all...

I can only comment on my satisfaction with the Aurora 9.  After decades of flying slope and using every kind of radio you can imagine, I have never been more satisfied with the A9.  For under $300, you get a radio that does it all.  I was particularly impressed with the ability to turn the throttle stick into a snap-flap stick for 3-D and freestyle slope flying.

Hello Paige,

I'm glad you've had good results with the new Aurora 9.  I presume that the 2.4ghz radio has the same, or better, range than the previous 72mhz versions.  I'm semi-impressed witht the binding scenarios and presume that there won't be any channel interference issues.   Thank you for the reply...

hi Jose, I also have a DX6i but haven't had any trouble with it. Never heard of the kind of issues you had either but I pretty much fly by myself and don't get out much... Sorry to hear about your radio!

I've never really figured out what the beeps I hear coming from my radio mean. always wondered if my battery is low (doesn't seem to correlate) or the radio was getting interference or what.
